The content of song lyrics are among the most hotly debated topics of our time for a number of reasons. First many people believe that song lyrics today are more explicit than lyrics in the past. Their reasons are varied, but they tend to agree in general on which artists should be the targets of such changes in the lyrics we permit on the airwaves.

Rap lyrics, or hip hop lyrics as they are more accurately called, are among the lyrics that these protesters feel are too offensive to be played. All rap lyrics, they argue, should be banned because they often degrade women and homosexuals. The people who oppose these songs also believe that a quick song lyric search will show that these lyrics glorify a life of violence and drugs and that they discourage their listeners from pursuing real work outside the underground culture of the cities. The response from hip hop artists has been that they do not glorify this life; they simply tell stories through their music about an urban culture that exists with or without the music.

Most parents believe that their children should be allowed to listen to what they want in general but should be monitored for particularly heinous lyrics. Given the popularity of these songs, though, it is unlikely that many parents are keeping their children from these artists. A quick look at the free lyrics should tell the parents whether or not the songs are appropriate and will help the parents watch their children’s behavior. The internet often gets the reputation for being terrible for children and teens and something that parents need to control tightly. While that may be true in other instances, it also is true that the online world offers ways for parents to be more informed about their children’s lives.
